11and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you, 12that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.
Make it your goal to live a quiet life, mind your own business, and work with your own hands, like we told you. That way you'll live decently in front of people outside the church, and you won't be dependent on anyone.
Nobody puts 'lead a quiet life' on a vision board, but Paul does, as an ambition. In a culture that treats being seen as the point, a life that mostly consists of doing your work and not being a burden looks small. Paul thinks it looks credible. Sometimes the most convincing thing about your faith is that you show up and do your job.
God, I'm tired of needing to be noticed, so help me be content doing my work well and quietly.
Do something useful today and don't post about it.

Moses is warning people who are about to get comfortable. The danger isn't the wealth; it's the story you tell about it afterwards, the one where you did it all yourself. You did work hard, and you were also born with a working brain, in a country with jobs, to people who kept you alive. Gratitude is just accurate accounting.
God, I know I worked for what I have, and I know I didn't make the hands I worked with, so thank you.

Because even the Son of Man didn't come to be waited on. He came to serve, and to give his life to buy freedom for many.
Two of the disciples had just asked for the top seats in the kingdom, and Jesus answered with his own job description. If you're asking what your purpose is, this is the pattern he set: not what you can get people to do for you, but what you can do for them. It's not a demotion. He says it's what the Son of Man came for.
Jesus, I keep angling for the better seat, so turn me around to face the people who need something.
Do one unasked-for job today that makes someone else's day easier.
